Harris grabs first career DIRTcar Nationals feature win at Volusia

On Monday afternoon, Clay Harris entered Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series (LOLMDS) action at Bubba Raceway Park (Ocala, Fla.) attempting to compete with the national tour with an underpowered motor. Drawing 49 cars, Harris recorded an 11th place finish in his heat, transferring him into the B-Main for another shot at the opening night feature. Locking in the Top 2, Clay fell short with a 10th-place outing.

For another $10,000-to-win A-Main on Tuesday, Clay came in seventh in his heat, giving him one final shot at the LOLMDS Speedweeks finale with a B-Main appearance. Needing to place third or better, Harris fell two spots short with a fifth-place finish.

On Wednesday, Harris headed to Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) competing in the UMP Modified ranks for the 50th annual DIRTcar Nationals. With a stout field of 94 Modifieds on hand, Clay followed up the fifth fastest time in his qualifying group with a third place finish in his heat. Slated to start the $1,000-to-win A-Main in 10th, Harris ran into electrical issues before the start that sidelined him for the remainder of the evening.

The following night, Clay edged his way into the feature with a fourth place finish in his heat. With $1,000 on the line, Harris faded six spots in the 20-lapper to record a 19th-place outing.

For five rounds of features on Friday, Harris locked into the fourth-starting position for the A-Main via point standings leading up to Friday night. Overtaking front-row starter Troy Johnson on the fifth lap, Clay held off the field following a late-race caution to capture his fourth win of the season and a $700 payday. Johnson, John McClure, Mark Grosvenor, and Chris Smith trailed him to the checkers in the 15-lap affair. (Rob Sweeten photo)

With saturated grounds postponing Saturday night’s program to Sunday afternoon, Harris laid down the fourth fastest lap in his time trial group on Sunday before placing eighth in his heat race. Starting the $700-to-win A-Main in 32nd, Clay pulled off early in the 20-lapper on the fifth lap.
