Clay Harris notches first win of the season in Sunshine Nationals at Volusia

Clay Harris kicked off his 2021 season on Thursday night at Volusia Speedway Park (Barberville, Fla.) pulling double duty in the 604 and 602 Late Model ranks for the DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals. With a stout field of 55 Crate Racin’ USA Winter Series entries converged in the pit area for the three-day event, Harris topped the charts in his qualifying group before placing second in his heat behind Johnny Collins. Starting the $1,500-to-win A-Main in 11th, Clay clawed forward one spot in the 25-lapper to register a 10th-place finish.

In his 602 Late Model, Clay followed up the second fastest lap overall in qualifying with a runner-up finish in his heat behind Wiley McDaniel. Outrunning Nevin Gainey in the 25-lap feature, Harris soared to his first win of the season over Gainey, Tyler Sanders, Hunter Hood, and Trey Mills. He earned $1,000 for his efforts.

After Mother Nature wiped out Friday night’s program, Harris edged his way into the $10,000-to-win Crate Racin’ USA Winter Series sanctioned feature on Saturday evening with a third place finish in his heat. Rolling off 16th, Clay was an early retiree from the 30-lap affair on lap 20.

With 35 602 Late Models on hand on Saturday for the Sunshine Nationals finale, Clay outdueled Cody Overton in his heat race to pick up the 6-lap victory. Starting the feature in eighth, Harris faded two spots in the 30-lapper to finish 10th.
